More than half of the 261 migrants expelled to El Salvador were deported under the sweeping wartime authority, known as the Alien Enemies Act, according to a senior administration official.
Of the 261 sent to the Central American nation, 137 people were removed under the proclamation signed Saturday, while the others were deported under other federal laws including migrants from El Salvador with alleged MS-13 gang ties.
Trump administration officials have described some of those removed over the weekend as alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, which served as the basis for the presidential proclamation invoking the Alien Enemies Act.
